VAI member roundtable reveals how visual-separation GENOT is affecting operations

Vertical Aviation International (VAI) convened another follow-up VAI member roundtable Apr. 24 to continue discussions on the implementation of the FAA’s visual separation GENOT (general notice) and to outline the helicopter route reviews being conducted at major airports this year. The roundtable included a check-in on how GENOT implementation is affecting operations, including ongoing issues related to air traffic control training, staffing, and consistency across facilities.

During the roundtable, members shared real-world operational feedback on how the GENOT is being applied across different regions and facilities. Operators discussed continued inconsistencies in interpretation, impacts on routing and access, and the importance of ensuring local facilities have the training, staffing, and guidance needed to implement the GENOT safely and predictably. Members also emphasized the need for continued communication between industry, FAA headquarters, regional offices, and local air traffic facilities as implementation continues.

VAI also discussed the FAA’s annual helicopter route review process, which is expected to begin in May, with new helicopter charts anticipated to take effect in October of this year. For real-time updates on those changes and that process, please email advocacy@verticalavi.org with your contact information, region, and local airport.

VAI leadership remains focused on moving forward with clarity and purpose as the FAA continues addressing specific issues and circumstances related to the GENOT. We’re committed to collaboration and transparency, and our priority is supporting our members and industry while bolstering the FAA’s efforts to refine and clarify requirements.

Please keep the operational feedback, concerns, and comments about the new mandate coming to advocacy@verticalavi.org.

We’re not waiting on progress—we’re pushing it. Be assured our team will stay closely aligned with the FAA and all stakeholders to deliver the outcomes this effort demands.
