President and CEO James Viola issued the following statement in response to the Jan. 29 midair collision of a US Army UH-60 Black Hawk and an American Airlines CRJ-701 near Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (KDCA): “On behalf of VAI, I express our deepest condolences to the families and loved ones affected by the tragic collision. We stand with the emergency responders and all involved in the ongoing efforts. As we await further details, please know that the vertical aviation community is with you in mourning during this incredibly difficult time.”

The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has determined the probable cause of the accident to be the pilot’s decision to continue the VFR flight into deteriorating weather conditions, which resulted in spatial disorientation and a loss of control.
