DLR tests active twist rotor to reduce helicopter noise

(Aerospace Testing International) – Researchers at the German Aerospace Center (DLR) have completed wind-tunnel tests of a four-bladed helicopter rotor system that uses piezoceramic actuators to actively twist the blades, demonstrating noise reductions of up to 7 dB during landing descent.

Helicopter search follows 4-hour swim to save family

(CBC) – Officials are crediting a 13-year-old boy with saving his mother and two younger siblings after swimming 4 km (2.5 miles) to alert police. A helicopter crew located the family members, who were swept out to sea while kayaking off the coast near Quindalup in Western Australia.

Proposed FAA AD: Bell Textron Canada Bell 407

The FAA is accepting comments through Mar. 20 on this proposed airworthiness directive (AD), which would require a one-time detailed visual inspection of the electrical harnesses for chafing. It would also require rotation of the backshell cast housing of connectors in the lower-engine airframe unit and installation of a wire-harness bracket and support, and—for certain helicopters—installation of a wire-bundle sleeve.

Final FAA AD: Leonardo AB 412 and AB 412EP

This FAA airworthiness directive (AD), which takes effect Feb. 18, requires revising the existing rotorcraft flight manual following reports of a cracked main-gearbox support case. The FAA is accepting comments on the AD through Mar. 20.

Japan, Brazil governments to cooperate on electric aircraft
