Vertical Aviation International (VAI) joins the aviation community in mourning the passing of Pete Riedl, an engineer and longtime leader at Robinson Helicopter Company (RHC). Riedl passed away peacefully on Jan. 28, 2025, surrounded by his family. For nearly 40 years, Riedl played a pivotal role at RHC. As the company’s vice president of engineering for two decades, he was instrumental in shaping the design and development of every helicopter it produced. After his partial retirement in 2024, he joined the RHC board of directors. His leadership in engineering, regulatory advocacy, and mentorship shaped not only his company but also the broader rotorcraft community. “As a Robinson R44 owner, I am struck by how Pete’s designs successfully balanced the needs of the pilot, safety, reliability, and elegance,” says James Viola, president and CEO of VAI. “His contributions have left an indelible mark on the industry, ensuring safety and efficiency for generations of pilots and operators.” According to an RHC statement, the young Riedl was hired by company founder and industry icon Frank Robinson. His first assignment: to lead the design and testing of what would become the R44 helicopter, the world’s best-selling general aviation helicopter. Following its success, Riedl spearheaded the development of the R66, Robinson’s first turbine aircraft. VAI extends its deepest condolences to Riedl’s family, friends, and colleagues.
